Vertical displacement oscillatory modes in tokamak plasmas
نویسندگان
چکیده
Vertical displacement normal modes in shaped tokamak plasmas are studied analytically, based on the reduced ideal-magnetohydrodynamic model. With help of quadratic forms, and using appropriate eigenfunction for vertical displacements with toroidal mode number $n=0$ dominant elliptical-angle $m=1$ , a dispersion relation is derived, including effects ideal or resistive walls through single parameter, $D_w(\gamma )$ which is, general, function complex eigenfrequency $\gamma = -{\rm i}\omega$ . For resistive-wall case, cubic $\gamma$ One root corresponds to well-known, non-rotating mode, growing time scale. The other two roots weakly damped by wall resistivity, but oscillate frequency below poloidal Alfvén frequency, makes them immune continuum damping, subject possible instability due resonant interaction fast ions.

Exponentially growing tearing modes in Rijnhuizen Tokamak Project plasmas.
The local measurement of the island width w, around the resonant surface, allowed a direct test of the extended Rutherford model [P. H. Rutherford, PPPL Report-2277 (1985)], describing the evolution of radiation-induced tearing modes prior to disruptions of tokamak plasmas. It is found that this model accounts very well for the observed exponential growth and supports radiation losses as being ...
متن کاملShort wavelength temperature gradient driven modes in tokamak plasmas.
New unstable temperature gradient driven modes in an inhomogeneous tokamak plasma are identified. These modes represent temperature gradient (ion and electron) driven modes destabilized in the short wavelength regions with k( perpendicular )rho(i,e)>>1, respectively. The instability occurs due to a specific plasma response that significantly deviates from Boltzmann distribution in the regions k...
متن کاملPotential Turbulence in Tokamak Plasmas
Microscopic potential turbulence in tokamak plasmas are investigated by a multi-samplevolume heavy ion beam probe. The wavenumber/frequency spectra S(k,ω) of the plasmas potential fluctuation as well as density fluctuation are obtained for the first time. The instantaneous turbulence-driven particle flux, calculated from potential and density turbulence has oscillations of which amplitude is ab...
متن کاملTransport equations in tokamak plasmas
Tokamak plasma transport equations are usually obtained by flux surface averaging the collisional Braginskii equations. However, tokamak plasmas are not in collisional regimes. Also, ad hoc terms are added for neoclassical effects on the parallel Ohm’s law, fluctuation-induced transport, heating, current-drive and flow sources and sinks, small magnetic field nonaxisymmetries, magnetic field tra...
متن کاملEigenvalue Spectrum of MHD Modes in Cylindrical Tokamak Plasmas with Small Resistivity
For the understandings of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics in plasma, the spectrum of the resistive MHD modes are investigated in detail by solving the eigenvalue problem of the reduced MHD equations in cylindrical tokamak plasmas. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the resistive MHD modes are clarified for small toroidal and poloidal mode numbers, and the discrete eigenvalues w...
